The Equality Act 2010

This new legislation brings together all the separate discrimination laws under one, single Act - including the old Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

The Equality Act covers race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, age, pregnancy / maternity and disability discrimination.

As you might expect, we're focussed on the disability strand of the legislation, what it means to disabled people and what it means to you.

It is more far-reaching than the old DDA and tightens up on a number of areas that had been, at best, vague.

More people are covered by the Act with discrimination by association and discrimination by perception being new additions to the legislation.

The DDA had been with us for fifteen years and was starting to make an impact in how businesses perceived and served their disabled customers. We're hoping that this new law will add impetus to this rate of change.

An opportunity, not a threat.

It shouldn't take the introduction of new, stronger legislation for businesses to treat their disabled customers properly. In 21st century Britain I believe it's morally right that disabled people receive the same level of service as non-disabled customers.

But, putting the law and moral reasons to one side, businesses can actually benefit from 'getting things right' for their disabled customers. I don't think that business owners, especially in today's economic climate, can afford to turn customers away. However, this is happening in many cases where disabled people can't physically get into a business or the level of service they receive puts them off ever returning there.

Get it right and you'll have very loyal customers and an improved bottom line.

Preaching to the converted

I know, I know - I'm preaching to the converted here, so apologies for my rant!
